What size air conditioning unit do I need?

This is a question we get asked a lot, and it’s important to choose the right size unit for your home or office to be efficient. How do you know what size AC unit you need?

There are a few things to consider when making this decision:

  • The square footage of the space you need to cool
  • The climate you live in
  • The number of people in your household
  • The amount of insulation in your home
  • Your windows and doors

The size of your room will be the main influence on what size air conditioning unit you need. Air conditioners are often graded by their BTU output. As a rule of thumb, a BTU output in the range of 5000 – 8000 should sufficiently cool most bedrooms and living rooms.

For a rough calculation of the size of the air conditioner needed you can use this simple formula: Measure the room in feet and multiply by those dimensions by 5.

For example: 6.5H x 10W x 16D x 5 = 5200 BTUs

What different types of air conditioning units are available?

There are 4 main types of air conditioners available on the market:

Window Unit – The most common type of air conditioner, window units are installed in a window. These work well for smaller spaces and can be installed quickly and easily.

Portable Unit – Portable air conditioners are free-standing units that can be moved from room to room as needed. These are a good option for people who rent their homes or apartments and cannot install a window unit.

Central Air Conditioning – Central air conditioning is a whole-home cooling solution. A central AC unit is usually more expensive to install than other types of air conditioners, but it will cool your entire home evenly.

Ductless Mini Split – Ductless mini-split air conditioners are similar to central AC units, but they don’t require ductwork. This makes them a more efficient and effective cooling solution for homes and businesses.

When choosing an air conditioning unit, it’s important to consider the size of the space you need to cool, the climate you live in, and the number of people in your household. With a little bit of research, you can find the perfect AC unit for your home or office.
